Stefanik and Malliotakis Reintroduce University Accountability Act
In response to the ongoing wave of antisemitic incidents on college campuses since the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks, Representatives Elise Stefanik and Nicole Malliotakis have reintroduced the University Accountability Act, a legislative effort to hold universities financially accountable for failing to protect Jewish students.
Rep. Stefanik, a consistent advocate against antisemitism in academia, emphasized her alignment with President Trump’s efforts to reform higher education.
“The University Accountability Act will impose penalties on universities who violate the civil rights of their own students and put their undeserved tax-exempt status on the chopping block,” Stefanik said.
Rep. Malliotakis echoed the urgency, calling out universities for turning a blind eye to rising antisemitic hate.
“We’re seeing a disturbing increase in antisemitic attacks and rhetoric on college campuses,” she stated. “Our legislation seeks to hold these institutions accountable and foster a safer academic environment for all.”
Key Provisions of the Bill
- Monetary Penalties: Colleges in violation of Title VI civil rights protections would face a minimum fine of $100,000 or 5% of their administrative compensation—whichever is greater.
- IRS Oversight: After three violations, the IRS must review the institution’s tax-exempt status for possible revocation.
- Civil Rights Enforcement: The bill strengthens enforcement beyond “corrective actions” and seeks tangible deterrents against antisemitic tolerance.
This legislation adds fuel to the national reckoning over campus antisemitism and sets the stage for deeper federal intervention in university policy.
