Arthur Butz

Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Northwestern University, Arthur Butz is not an educator—he is a long-standing purveyor of Holocaust denial and antisemitic propaganda who uses his protected academic status to shield one of the most despicable ideologies in modern history. While Northwestern University has condemned his views, his continued presence on the faculty—under the banner of “academic freedom”—undermines the moral and intellectual integrity of the institution.

Holocaust Denial Disguised as “Research”

In 1976, Butz published “The Hoax of the Twentieth Century”, a book that outright denies the Holocaust occurred. His central argument? That the systematic murder of six million Jews by the Nazis is a fabricated “hoax” perpetrated by Zionists for political purposes.

  • He falsely asserts: “The alleged slaughter of millions of Jews by the Germans… did not happen.”

  • He blames Jews themselves for what he claims is a manufactured narrative: “The hoax had a Zionist provenance and motivation.”

  • He has since republished the book (2003) and publicly supported global Holocaust deniers, including Iran’s former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Support for Antisemitic Regimes and White Supremacists

Butz openly endorsed Ahmadinejad’s denial of the Holocaust and praised his stance as “accurate,” saying the Iranian president’s statements “repeated [his] three theses.” His views have not softened over time. Instead, he continues to support:

  • CODOH (Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust)

  • Institute for Historical Review (IHR) — a notorious Holocaust denial network

  • IHR Conferences — where he has mocked survivors, praised Nazi leaders like Himmler, and labeled Holocaust testimonies as “legends”

  • On X (formerly Twitter), he follows known antisemites, Holocaust deniers, and white supremacists, including Hesham Tillawi and American White.

A Danger to Higher Education

While Northwestern University has claimed Butz has not brought his views into the classroom, his very presence as a professor grants legitimacy to Holocaust denial under the guise of scholarship. He continues to:

  • Publish and speak at Holocaust denial conferences

  • Promote antisemitic and white nationalist content online

  • Defend Nazi war criminals

  • Mock survivors of genocide

Why He Must Be Removed

Arthur Butz does not belong in any academic setting—much less one charged with educating the next generation. His role as a faculty member is a stain on Northwestern’s reputation and sends a chilling message to Jewish students and all who believe in truth, history, and human dignity.

  • He denies the Holocaust and glorifies those who carried it out.
  • He platforms hate and white supremacy under the cover of academic tenure.
  • He uses his university affiliation to amplify disinformation and bigotry.

Academic freedom is not a shield for historical revisionism that fuels antisemitism.
Arthur Butz’s continued employment is a betrayal of Northwestern’s values—and of history itself.
